Debbie had a baby and other interesting events

So, what has been happening in my life recently?

Well, for starters Debbie had a baby... let me reiterate that, Debbie had a baby... A BABY...DEBBIE HAD A BABY!!!!!!

Yep, that's right, as of 4am this morning Debbie and Dec are now proud parents to a beautiful baby girl weighing in at a respectable 7lb 8oz and I for one can't wait to meet her. Though I do have to say I am picturing a miniature Declan with a massive mop of black hair and bright green eyes :-) I wish them the best of luck and know that they will be absolutely fantastic parents and will spoil her rotten!

In other, yet decidedly less exciting news I am back in Newcastle. After a mass panic that I was never going to find a placement and I would spend the rest of my life resigned to asking people "Would you like fries with that?" I finally found somewhere, and once again I owe my thanks to Gary Wright and the Staff at Benton Dene for taking me under their wing once more. You now all need to start addressing me as Miss Fenwick now that I am a teacher of a class of 32 reception children. Smart shirts and pinstripe trousers are once more being adorned although my alarm is now set for 7:30am and not 5:45 am like last year, so at least there are some improvements!

The last few weeks have been an incredibly stressful time for the residents of 29 St Anns, with three out of five of us preparing for teaching practise, it has been a regular occurrence to find crumpled up lesson plans, empty cups of coffee and irritable students in many different rooms of the house, library and even, on occasion sleeping in the Chaplaincy lounge. Three exams in three days, combined with placement schools dropping out and studies have to be rewritten have led to a very stress filled environment and I would like to extend my gratitude to the following people for the following reasons;

Chris and Holly: For feeding me the worlds hottest take-away and making me laugh non stop in the chaplaincy!

Ash and Gareth: For keeping me fed and caffeinated (yes its a word) during the past three weeks and Ash for sitting watching Mean Girls with me.

LTULFC: For letting me vent my anger and stress on the football field, even if it meant being knocked out by a flying ball and loosing my contact lens somewhere in Huddersfield!

Emily: For making me realise no matter how stressed I am, at least I'm not up writing lesson plans in the middle of the night :-P

And lastly but in no means least;

Liv: For making me smile, laugh, forget about exams and reminding me that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

You have all been amazing people, and I couldn't have done it with out you! Thank you so much and I'll see you all next year!

"Bang and the dirt is gone"

This week has been possibly the weirdest week since we all moved in together at St Ann's Avenue. Now that we all have modes of transport that suitably represent our budgets; Liv in her Red Ford Ka, Emily in her Ginger Suzuki Swift and me on my bike, jokes have started, road rage and parking wars have begun. Liv has already tried to kill me twice on Kirkstall Road and Emily...well, Emily just screams as she goes down the M6 in first gear at 40 mile an hour! Safe to say, I'm keeping my bike!

Thursday saw Emily take the Slogan "Bang and The Dirt Is Gone" quite literally. After falling asleep Liv decided to throw her Laptop down the stairs creating an almighty bang and triggering a very confused Emily to leap out of bed and run down to the Kitchen proclaiming "MY WASHING'S DONE!" before sheepishly returning to her room. Apparently a huge crash does not signal the end of the washing machine cycle.

What can we say about Liv? Well I think its safe to presume she is slowly losing the plot. PGCE is officially destroying brain cells 1 by 1. Watching The Lord of The Rings with her, demonstrated this quite well, when she stated rather loudly that she was going to report Sauron to Leeds City Council for pulling up the trees! If this wasn't bad enough it was shortly followed with the statement that should Legolas be in her class he would most definitely be a Gifted and Talented child. I despair about her sometimes I really do!

This week has seen a number of other revelations such as:

  • Random sentence generators are the greatest form of procrastination ever
  • No matter how hard you try,you will never find Kosher Ham
  • Fairy cakes are made of cake and buns are made of bread
  • The terms "Liv exercises above a Frog" and "The wrist suppresses the hardy grief" is funny in any language, even Elvish
Here's to hoping that next week is a little bit more sane!

Halfords, Hats and Hideous Maths!

Today is Day 1 in Operation Get-Fit (aka, justify spending scary amounts of money on a shiny new bike) and it has made me realise how incredibly unfit I am. After a nice casual walk down to Halfords in Kirkstall, about 2 miles, I was pleasantly surprised with myself...that was until I actually got on the bike and cycled back. Uphill. Dying does not even begin to cover it!

Naturally I was expecting love, care and possibly even a cup of tea from my concerned housemates...then I remembered who I lived with, and sure enough, walking into the kitchen, out of breath and with a face the same colour as my new helmet, the laughter and bike jokes started! All changed as we strapped Emily into the helmet, shoved her on the bike and pushed her down the hill as she attempted to dodge stationary cars while making rather hilarious sound effects! Safe to say I am the better cyclist (though she pulls the hat off better!)Before returning to the house and ordering the largest takeaway known to man. (Operation what-now?)

Today has also been a day of realisation. Realisation that is, that Emily and Liv don't know their times tables and the QTS Maths standards tests are the most horrendous things ever to be brought into existence. So after many hilarious questions and four failed attempts to figure out that 8 x 3 is in fact 24. We came to the realisation that these tests are going to require a heck of a lot more revision that initially thought! Though why a Foundation Stage Teacher needs to know fractions, percentages, long division and algebra is beyond me!

This question was taken from the practise paper and you are given 10 seconds to answer it before the next is read out.

As part of the numeracy work in a lesson, pupils were asked to stretch a spring to
extend its length by 40 per cent. The original length of the spring was 45 centimetres.
What should be the length of the extended spring? Give your answer in centimetres.

A teacher took a group of pupils to an aquarium whilst visiting France. The total
entrance cost for the group was 160 euros.
Taking 1.6 euros as equal to 1 pound, what was the total entrance cost, in pounds,
for the group of pupils?

These are all non calculator questions, so I think you can see why we were beginning to panic!

The highlight of the evening award however, goes to Emily for being sat at the dinner table with Giant Sunglasses, bright blue Atari headphones and a rather sequinned top hat.

(This post may be updated when the photos of Emily bombing it down the hill in a red helmet come in to fruition :-D )

Things you figure out when you don’t have the internet!

So, the residents of 29 St Ann’s Avenue were without broadband for 72 hours (or a TV Licence!) and during this stressful period many revelations were uncovered. Here are just some of the things you can discover when you are stuck without the wonder that is the tinterweb.

·         You actually have house mates, they are wonderful people who will help you through this difficult period in your life
·         Conversations will revolve around food, relationships and sex
·         You will consume more food out of sheer boredom than you would usually eat in a week
·         Looking out of the window is fascinating and will entertain you for hours, especially if it’s raining
·         The kitchen will become spotless as all confused house mates will gather and for no apparent reason start cleaning
·         It is a perfect opportunity to look for jobs, spend 4 hours finishing and perfecting your CV and then get irrationally angry when you remember there is no internet and you can’t email said CV to potential employers.
·         It doesn't matter how many times you press refresh, the internet will not magically come back on
·         None of your neighbours have kindly set their wireless passwords to “password”
·         Uncomfortable silences happen often
·         You learn more about your house mates in a few hours than you have in 4 years
·         Kelly Clarkson does not just help you through break ups, dancing to her in the kitchen can also help during through internet black-outs

But most importantly…
·         Despite the absence of internet you still lack the will power to actually venture out in to the world

The House of Abandonment and Chaos

Over the past few months there has been a steady stream of people in and out of 29 St Ann's Avenue and we are only just getting back to normality.

Housemate number one left us around February time, so we have had a spare room for a while, this was occupied sporadically ever since then by, uni mates, other mates, visiting siblings, and even lecturers! Then Graduation happened and at one point during these hectic few weeks, when people were being kicked out of housing, contracts were coming to an end and new ones were being signed, there were 8 people living in a 5 bedroomed house, and on actual graduation 12 of us (13 if you count Deb's baby bump!) were holed up in close proximity. Patiences were being tried and tested, bathroom feuds were regular and fridge space was like gold dust.

Now I would love to be able to say that this was all rectified and back to normal, but alas no. After a few crazy weeks of Josh officially moving into the spare room and Ash and Gareth crashing on the sofa for a while, and Will moving in upstairs, it was time for people to drift back and forward for the summer. At last, a few peaceful weeks of not many people in the house.

However...Now Josh was moving out again, along this time, with Debs, Dec and bump, Ash was officially moving into the basement and I was coming back from a few weeks in Newcastle. Obviously we all have amazing timing and managed to all decide to move out/in on the same day (ok Josh didn't but stay with me!) Hectic doesn't even cover it! Debbie and Dec gutting an entire basement and Ash refilling it, along with all the  stuff that Will was moving out there were boxes EVERYWHERE! Food in random cupboards and bags, and God only knows what, down next to the sofa's! Things were going missing, items that hadn't been seen in months were turning up and the yoghurt was moving out of its own accord.

Three days later and here we are, back to Me, Emily and Ash, (Liv moves back in this week :D ) and a relatively quite existence. It feels weird after the constant stream of people and chaos we've had since mid June. Its even quieter too, now that Dora has also gone! (Possibly miss her more than some of the people!)

Finally, to the lads at uni who reckon whomever I touch suddenly moves out/goes abroad, it seems to be getting more true as time passes!  Think we're up to about 12 now! So, on that note, I will bid ye all farewell!

Much love,

Rosie...One of 4 left in the House of Abandonment

A New Chapter

The new layout to my blog is just the beginning of the new chapter of my life. Many people decide to make changes and drastically alter their lives at New Year or after birthdays, but why wait?

I start my fourth and final year of Uni in September and for me that is a perfect time to change everything! Anyone who knows me will be aware that I am a HUGE cycling fan and have been for a number of years, but living in Leeds I haven't had access to a bike...That will change! Looking ahead and seeing myself in Leeds for the forseeable future my loans this year shall be spent on a shiny new road bike (which hopefully I will use to get to uni)

This is goal number one: Improve fitness:
Along with the bike, there will be gym memberships and rugby training, so by the end of the year I will have abs like Jessica Ennis!

Goal number two: SAVE MONEY!!!
Like I said before I am in my final year of university, after this year there will be no more student loans or bursaries! I'm doing a teaching degree so even if I do manage to get a job straight after I graduate, I wont start until September, meaning I won't get paid until October. Leaving money to be found for deposits for new houses, rent for 2/3 months, bills, food etc...I really need to get saving! Depending on whether placement is  beofre or after Christmas this year, depends on when I start looking for the inevitable part time job I'm gonna be needing! (Actually scratch that, EuroMillions here I come!)

Goal number three: Eat better
I guess this ties in with Operation 'Get Fit' really, and its not like I eat horrendously anyway. I'm not a big snacker, nor do I eat a lot of chocolate or live on ready meals. As a household we're pretty good at keeping each other fed with proper home-made stews and casseroles, Spag Bol's and chilli's, I guess I just need more variation, and maybe (dare I say it) more veg in my life! :-0 The slow cooker is gonna get a lot of action this year!

Goal Number four: See the Book of Mormon in London and live my life like the songs!
Ok, this is a bit of a daft one but with lyrics like this, why not!
You and me, but mostly me
Are gonna change the world forever
'cause I can do most everything
(And I can stand next to you and watch)

Every hero needs a sidekick
Every captain needs a mate (Aye, Aye)
Every dinner needs a side dish
(On a slightly smaller plate)
And then of course there is Emily's favourite!
When you start to get confused
Because of thoughts in your head
Don't feel those feelings
Hold them in instead

Turn it off
Like a light switch
Just go click
It's a cool little Mormon trick
We do it all the time

When you're feeling certain feelings that just don't seem right
Treat those pesky feelings like a reading light

And turn 'em off
Light a light switch
Just go back
Really, what's so hard about that

So I leave you with a Musical reference! No surprise really, but we'll see how well I manage to stick to these  goals, and hopefully by this time next year, I will have a job, be fit, and have a little bit of money saved up. That would be nice wouldn't it!

I Need To Get Out More!

Today has been one of the most random days ever.

To start with, I was woken up by the fire alarm, now many of you may think that I'd be used to this living in this house. However, this time the fire alarm was coming from next door, which is unoccupied...spooky! so whatever the builders were doing in there I'm pretty sure it wasn't what they were supposed to be doing!

Next, well OK a while later, after making dinner I came back upstairs to look out my window and find some random guy de-weeding our front step and pathway! Not a clue who he was! Looked like someone's Granddad, a little grey-haired fellow who, when I opened the window to cause a distraction, looked up at me, smiled, waved and carried on with what he was doing...It was as if a randomer de-weeding your garden was the most normal thing on the planet!

Finally, now this is the best one! Debbie and Dec brought a friend from work home to go house viewing with them. I did not know this, and as I was kindly bringing in their Asda delivery through into the kitchen there he was...The exact replica of Emily's Ex! I screamed....proper actually screamed at the poor man! Not only was there a stranger in my kitchen he was the splitting image of someone who very definitely should not have been there! The poor guy is probably traumatised after an irrational Geordie in her pyjamas yelled at him incoherently while dragging Asda bags across the floor! Not the best welcome to a house I expect!

However, all normality was restored when Josh returned from work with cake...Marks and Spencer Staff perks are the best :-)

Luckily Emily and Liv are taking me to Leeds tomorrow, so I can get out of this house and back to normality!
